One of my favorite films. The imagery is so poetic and understated.

This is cinematography that’s not just pretty to look at but beautiful and moving as well. Images that convey emotion and feeling.

Indie Game: The Movie

Career Timeline: 1985 - Little Nemo in Slumberland

Moebius is approached by Tokyo Movie Shinsha to do concept design work and script revisions for their animated feature film based on Winsor McCay’s comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland.

By: Olivia Collette
Chicago Sun-Times, 3/25/2012

The Persistence of Memory

Memories don’t really have a beginning, a middle and an end. They’re more like vignetted sensations, impressions and paraphrases, where the most prominent detail might be sticky fingers from handling a bunch of wheat. If you could only live with one memory for all eternity, which would it be? That’s the question Hirokazu Koreeda’s “After Life” asks, while also showing us what makes something memorable.

The film begins simply. Somewhere in the Japanese countryside, the recently departed arrive at a place that’s a bit like a halfway house. Here, they’re told they must purge all of their memories save one, which they’ll live with forever. They’re paired with counselors who help them sift through their emotional filing cabinets and pick a defining moment. It’ll then be recreated in a short film that the dead get to direct, star in and watch.

Among the newly deceased, there’s always that one guy who keeps harping on about sex, only to settle on a modest, intimate memory that usually involves a loved one. Sex is a potent “in the now” experience, but upon reflection, it’s everything around it that either gives it meaning or renders it meaningless. And the memory you live with forever has to have meaning.

The film also subtly argues that meaning can’t be manufactured. When one teenage girl declares she’d like to reproduce Disney’s Splash Mountain, her counselor Shiori points out its conformity. Many young girls choose that ride, it turns out. In the end, the teenager changes her mind and opts for that time when she rested her head on her mother’s lap and smelled her perfume.

Most of the memories hardly require any dialogue because they’re so personal and introspective. They capture feelings, ambiance, texture, the very thrill of living. One man chooses his daily childhood tram ride on his way to school, with a hot wind blowing through the first-seat window. Another wants to go relive the first time he flew a Cessna and the way the cotton-like clouds brushed past him so quickly. One senile lady is showered with falling cherry blossom flowers, since blooms are the only thing her child’s mind delights in.

“After Life” blatantly associates film-making with memory. During their sessions with the dead, the counselors try to extract as many details as possible so they can represent them accurately on screen. There’s nothing ethereal about the work involved: they go location-scouting, they build sets, and if need be, they bring in some actors. The movies are never exactly as the subjects picture them, but the tone and intent are spot on. Takashi’s last reflection feels like an acknowledgment of how profoundly filmmakers can move their audience.

What I remember about movies is a lot like the bits in my life that stand out. It’s never just the film itself; it’s the context too.

Trailer for Abbas Kiarostami’s LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE

they should have sent a poet. or a Björk.

well, a teaser trailer for what’s probably gonna be the best film of 2012 has arrived, right on time to carry this thing into the Cannes line-up when it’s revealed next month. supposedly a spiritual successor to the unspeakably brilliant Certified Copy, Like Someone in Love (previously known as The End) finds the master of heart-gripping self-reflexivity making another film away from his native Iran, this time in Japan.

the trailer doesn’t give us much. it doesn’t even seem like a trailer at all, so much as it does a leaked little snippet of misc. footage. a shot framed by a window, mediating between an interior and exterior space? check. a shot of a car’s passenger seat as seen from outside the windshield? check. my heart skipping a beat because this is practically my Hunger Games? check.

I’ve been excited about this documentary...

Harana - Trailer

I’ve been excited about this documentary since I saw the trailer several years ago. Looks like production is now complete and we may be able to see it later this year!

I love the song the gentleman in the field sings, “Maruja” ?

Congrats to the team!

Synopsis:

HARANA
A Benito Bautista Film

Upon his father’s death, Florante, a classically trained musician returns to the Philippines after 12 years of absence. During his stay he rediscovers the music of Harana – a long-forgotten tradition of Filipino serenading when men sang under the window at night to fearlessly declare their love for a woman.

Intent on unearthing these unheralded songs, Florante travels to the remote provinces where he discovers three of the last surviving practitioners – a farmer, a fisherman and a tricycle driver. Astounded by their golden voices, Florante asks them to travel with him to perform and record these unknown songs. During their travels, the haranistas meet Brian, a shy young man who for years has been secretly in love with a schoolmate. The haranistas, who have not serenaded in the last 30 years, offered their services to serenade Brian’s object of affection, resulting in one of the most tender moments of genuine harana captured on film.

Word soon spread around Manila of leathery faced men whose style of sincere and expressive singing touch the hearts everywhere they sang, culminating in a series of triumphant live performances – from a small village to prestigious concert halls to recording the first authentic harana album in the last 50 years. But the question remains – can the harana tradition be restored to its former glory or is it doomed to vanish silently into the night forever?
